Prioritize Culture: 13 Ways To Make Your Agency An Interesting Place To Work

How a room is organized sets the mood for the people working there. An open space, divided heavily by walls? A haven for introverts or people working on specialized projects. That same space, with comfy chairs and movable desks? Expect a more social team, with conversation and shared ideas.

Agencies regularly develop strong, creative content while trying to keep their teams happy and engaged. And while the office environment is part of that, it’s not the only way to improve both work and morale. Forbes Agency Council members offer suggestions for making an agency a more interesting and inspiring place to work, ranging from adding plants to your officeto attending more conferences.

1. Recognize The Regular Triumphs

We "gamify" a lot of what we do. We quantify what people are doing and what they’re “closing” in terms of results, etc. When people are recognized for the little day-to-day, month-to-month triumphs, it makes work fun. Like playing a game. - Nicole Rodrigues, NRPR Group, LLC

2. Rearrange Your Work Space

Create a desirable work environment. If you have an open floor plan, consider arranging the office so it has space for privacy, collaboration and relaxation. Additionally, have a whiteboard where employees can write down any requests for the office. This could be snacks, supplies, or any fun gizmos and gadgets. By providing extra amenities, you could change the attitudes of employees. - Solomon Thimothy, OneIMS

3. Let Employees Explore Ideas And Collaborate

Forget investing in a new team or physical space to encourage innovation. An entire agency can embrace this mindset if you foster an environment where new ideas and perspectives are celebrated, and complacency and risk aversion is discouraged. Empower employees with the freedom to explore unconventional ideas and experiment through collaboration with new team members. - Dan LaCivita, Firstborn

4. Visit Exhibits

Back away from the computer with your team once a month and see an interesting exhibit, installation, activation or new retail concept. This may not directly assist with a current project, but it will encourage your team to look for creative solutions outside of their tool box. Help inspire creative thinking and ways of seeing. Good ideas can come from anywhere. - Jamie Wachlarz, Krupp Group

5. Blend Life And Work Environments

Our concept for building a unique company culture is blending the live-work experience. When you come to work, it should feel like home. We have sofas and lounge areas, ping-pong, quiet meeting rooms, a kegerator, kitchen with stainless steel appliances, food catering, and even an arcade. We have found this reduces stress with team members, attracts new talent, and actually increases productivity. - Nick-Bjorn Slettengren, Power Digital Marketing

6. Develop Leadership Programs

Investing in employees is an incredible way to make your agency stand out. Through leadership development programs, agencies can foster employee motivation, as well as stimulate creativity. At our agency, we’ve created a six-month leadership development program, where employees work directly with our management team on high-level projects and business development. - Ryan Pezzotti, Knowzo
